Before You are a Mother, You are His Daughter.

A reminder for pregnancy, birth and postpartum.

“Joy is knowing whose I am."

Pregnancy has a way of making everything about the baby, the birth, and the postpartum season.

We are faced with the enormous mountain of logistics, of care providers, of decisions, of pregnancy complications, interventions, dreams and desires for birth and the list goes on.

Many of us find it difficult to continue our prayer and devotional lives with God in the same way.

Is this surprising?

After all, we are approaching a huge turning point and everything we know is changing!

Our prayers might sound something like this:

"Lord, keep this baby healthy”

"God, protect my baby."

"Give me the birth I long for."

Those prayers are beautiful and there is absolutely nothing wrong with those prayers!

But somewhere along the way we can stop simply being daughters, sitting in the presence of our loving heavenly Father.

We forget whose we are.

Right now. In this moment.

Our God-given maternal instincts kick in and we will ferociously do ALL we can to keep our babies safe and well. This becomes our focus, and it is part of our wonderful design!

But, somewhere along the way, we are distracted from the most important thing:

That before we are a mother, we are HIS daughter.

That we are loved unconditionally, by the Maker of Heaven and Earth.

I love the song ‘Gladden’ by Anna Vernon, the heart of it is that joy isn't ultimately found in everything going according to plan.

There is a deeper joy in knowing whose you are.

And perhaps this is something we need to remember in birth preparation.

Not just,

“How can I prepare for birth?”

But,

“How can I prepare my heart to remember that I belong to God, whatever birth brings?”

Or if you are postpartum:

“How can I remember my first identity as a daughter of the King today, even more than ‘Mother’?”

I wonder if you could take a moment to pause and sit with God, with no other agenda other than being with Him.

Not praying about birth.

Not praying about breastfeeding.

Not praying about labour, or postpartum.

Just being His.

His daughter. The one he cares about and loves deeply.

He wants you to receive from Him today.

Spend a moment thinking and asking Him what He wants you to receive from Him.

Maybe you could listen to ‘Gladden’.
